The Law and Policy Group knows that our strength lies not only in the words we stand by, but most importantly through the actions of our initiatives. Back in 2011, our Non-Profit Organization realized that by working together we could overcome our challenges much more efficiently, and that is why we ultimately decided to launch
Law and Policy Group.

She was ten years old when she was first told by a teacher that she would only go so far with her studies in this world. “Maybe you can only do but so much,” the teacher said to her about a low score on a reading exam. The expectations for her were kept tragically low, and she almost met them. It wasn’t until she experienced one teacher who would change all of that. Her English teacher sophomore year of high school told her a different story. She told her about expectations to do better and a clear pathway to greater learning. When Tonya’s brother was killed in her neighborhood, shot down after barely turning 18, she knew change needed to come. She wanted to do more to protect those who were being violently killed every day. She remembered her English teacher, the one who said she could and should do better. The words inspired her to become more, to work toward ending social injustice in whatever small way she could in her life. She became a social worker, she worked every day defending the most vulnerable in society—she made a difference. There are several stories like this being told every day, but champions for social justice and equality are born out of dialogue and inspired by people who want to make a change…just like Tonya.
